Linn-Benton Community College Chinook Hall

Corvallis, Oregon

How do we convert an existing cold-storage warehouse into an innovative learning environment?

FFA is currently providing design services for the adaptive re-use of an existing bus maintenance facility on Linn-Benton Community College’s (LBCC) Benton campus into a 21st-century collaborative learning building. The converted building will provide LBCC with two science labs and six classrooms capable of holding over 200 total students, as well as provide the local community with a meeting space capable of hosting large public gatherings.

Leveraging a highly collaborative design process with LBCC’s stakeholders, FFA has created a design that completely transforms the currently windowless concrete structure into a building that enhances learning and reflects LBCC’s institutional values.

The existing envelope has been strategically penetrated through the use of curtainwalls, skylights, and windows to maximize view and daylighting opportunities for the faculty and staff. A second floor is being added to nearly double the programmable space and create a vibrant community core for the building. The core is strategically programmed with a wide range of seating and furniture options and spaces that help stimulate interaction between faculty and staff.
